Tendon Injuries Q & A

What causes tendon injuries?

Your tendon can become inflamed, a condition known as tendinitis, or it can have tiny tears, which is called tendinosis. Most tendon injuries occur around joints, and you can easily injure tendons by:

  • Overuse, such as by frequent throwing
  • Landing incorrectly while walking, running, or jumping
  • Tripping or falling
  • Playing sports

Tendon injuries, including golfer’s elbow, tennis elbow, and Achilles tendonitis, are some of the most common injuries athletes face. Although in some cases, tendon injuries develop as a result of aging and natural wear-and-tear. No matter the cause though, it’s important to get treatment as soon as you start experiencing symptoms.

What are the symptoms of tendon injuries?

The symptoms you experience with a tendon injury can vary from mild to severe, depending on the extent of overstretching or tearing of your tendon. Some of the most common signs and symptoms of a tendon injury include:

  • Pain that worsens with movement
  • Stiffness or swelling
  • Tenderness or warmth
  • Limited range of motion

You might also find that you have difficulty bearing weight on the affected area if the injured tendon is in a lower extremity. You could also experience difficulty gripping or holding on to items if you have a tendon injury in your upper extremity. In any case, Dr. Rubinshteyn has a solution to help you get relief.

How are tendon injuries treated?

As with most soft tissue injuries, time and rest are always beneficial for allowing your tendon to heal. Dr. Rubinshteyn can alleviate pain and discomfort and help you restore full function by designing a tendon injury treatment plan that may include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Compression wrapping
  • Casting or bracing
  • Range-of-motion exercises
  • Physical therapy

To further improve your healing process and decrease inflammation, Dr. Rubinshteyn provides platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections right in the office.* This modern regenerative therapy involves extracting some of your body’s most powerful healing cells from your blood and injecting them directly into your injured area.

Occasionally, arthroscopic surgery is the best way to treat a serious tendon injury though. During this minimally invasive procedure, Dr. Rubinshteyn reattaches or repairs your tendon, sometimes with a graft. This is usually the last resort if conservative therapies haven’t worked for you.
